History

BSi developed the first standard for an environmental management system, BS 7750, in 1992. This documented standard provided the basic framework for the development of ISO 14001 in 1996. ISO 14001 is one of 16 standards within the ISO 14000 family which is intended to promote more effective and efficient environmental management as well as providing useful tools such as ISO 14004, a guide to developing a good environmental management system (EMS).

ISO 14001 is not a management system; it is a standard that helps organisations to develop their own environmental management system. It is known as a generic management system standard, meaning that it is applicable to any size and type of organisation, providing any product or service, in any sector of activity.
